How to Select the Right Online Degree Program

THE CHALLENGE YOU FACE AND THE QUESTIONS YOU MUST ASK

The Challenge You Face

Incredible growth in online degrees is aimed at matching the ever-growing demand for distance learning. Over 90 percent of traditional adult education institutions provide or are planning to provide some kind of online or distance learning programs. In 1993, Peterson's Guide to U.S. Colleges listed only 93 accredited cyberschools. Incredibly, this number had grown to nearly 1,200 by 2001.

Today there is a large selection of online degree, distance learning and education institutions for students to choose from. Online degree and career education schools can be anything from fly-by-night diploma mills to fully accredited universities that were born on the Web (such as Jones International University or Kennedy Western University) to programs that are sponsored by traditional universities. In an arena such as online technical training, where no official standards exist, almost anyone can confer some form of a degree.

It is also important to know that in most states and countries outside the United States the use of the term university is not governed by any regulation. And unfortunately, in some states there is nothing that can be done to remedy the situation.
